If drugs don’t get you, a police bullet may. For the Sharma family, this can be now an awful reality as their 24-year-old daughter Neha isn't any more, thanks to triggering happy cops who on Sunday in broad day mistook her and three of her girl friends as the terrorists who had escaped from Nabha jail.
Neha’s elder brother Karan is jobless, had ceased studies in Course 8 and has been a drug addict. Their dad died.
Karan says he's free of habit now, but nothing prepared the family for the telephone call on Sunday saying Neha was dead, shot twice from a cops gun in her heart and midsection.
Six months ago, the family moved into their house in Patiala, bought totally with Neha ’s gains, her inconsolable mother Neelam told ET. It's Neelam's birthday on Monday — the day Neha has been cremated.
“On Saturday, she's taken me and shown me a Scooter which she wanted to purchase for mum on her birthday. We had booked it,” says Karan.
Neha selected to sit in the front seat alongside the driver, Sarabjit Singh.
Near village Dharamhedi, on Neha’s course, five policemen had set up a couple of barricades after being raced into the site carrying out a high-alert.
Around 11 am, as the barricade was approached by Neha's car, a policeman indicated them to halt.
Sarvajit planned to stop after the next barricade and slowed the car. Another policeman in plain clothes standing ahead of the second barricade opened fire in the front and sprayed the front windshield of the car with bullets before he could do this.
“Neha did not yell. She died forthwith. A bullet had pierced her heart and one hit on her in the midsection,” Soni, who was in the back seat says. Others in the auto had a miraculous escape.
Four out of the five, the cops, fled from the scene in an SUV as an alternative to speed Neha. One cop was caught by individuals and made to drive the Swift auto to the nearby hospital, but Neha was by then. “How could four girls sitting in a car to be terrorists in the broad day be mistaken by authorities?
The car even failed to have tinted glasses. Cops could have fired at the tyres of the auto even in the event the driver had not slowed down. Why did they shoot at my sister?” a furious Karan inquires.
The Patiala SSP and District Collector had this much to little answers when they visited with the family on Monday, only telling them that the cops erred in the cop that is guilty as well as panic has been booked for murder.
The AAP nominee from Patiala, Dr Balbir Singh, was present at the cremation. “I 'm told when the fire was opened; the car had already stopped. The body has been cremated by the family. Now they'll get nothing. Unfortunately, this is Punjab government works,” Dr Singh said.
