A first-year student of Marine Engineering at Cochin University of Technology and Science tried suicide on Tuesday night after allegedly being subjected to ragging by some of his college seniors.
According to a report, a resident of Trikkaripur in Kasargod, Ashish Thampan, consumed poison after returning home. He's since been admitted in a hospital in Mangaluru.
He mentioned some pupils’ names on his posts who are considered to be the ones who said that he was not aware of the names of many others and harassed him. He went to name a few faculty members, though he mentioned them is still not clear.
The authorities were not able as he wasn’t in a secure condition to consider Ashish’s statement. When we attempted to talk to him, He was just rambling. So we had to return without recording his statement. However, the physicians told us that his state wasn't critical. We have not received any complaint in the boy’s parents.
Praveen, a teacher at a coaching centre Ashish, used to attend said that Ashish had been ragged by his senior pupils previously too. He said they used to compel him to drink booze and beat him up if he refused to mind.
Praveen also asserted that four months back when he had just joined the college as his seniors beat him up, he needed to take medical treatment, however as he worried that they might cause him more harm he didn’t report.
According to media reports, Ashish’s father PV Thampan has written demanding action against the students.
Director of Marine Engineering Department of CUSAT said that no instance of ragging had been reported to the authorities till now, yet they have reported to the university registrar and is anticipated to report precisely the same to law enforcement. Ashish’s allegations have been beginning over by them.
